Edit Code Values and Value Labels

Selecting the "More" button to the right of the Values field on the Variables tab of the data grid, allows you to enter Code values and assign a descriptive Value label for each Code value added on the Edit Code Values and Value Labels dialog.

Add a New Item

Adds a new Code value and Value label for the selected Variable.

Change Selected Item

Changes the Code value and/or Value label for the selected Variable.

Apply Title Case

Changes all Value labels to title case (for example, "Less than 1 hour per week" would be changed to "Less than 1 Hour per Week").

Apply Sentence Case

Changes all Value labels to sentence case (for example, "Less than 1 hour per week").

Renumber Code Values

Renumbers Code Values in sequential numeric order. This option is only applicable if there is a gap in code values assigned. For example, if you have entries for code values 1-3,5,7-9 and you choose Renumber Code Values, the result will be code values1-7.

Move Value Label Up

Moves the selected Value label up in the list. The Code value associated with the selected Value label does not move with the value label because code values have to be in numeric, sequential order. When you move the Value label up, it will be assigned the Code value of the previous Value label as it moves. For example, if the value label of "More than 20 hours per week" was originally assigned the code value of "7", and you selected this code value/value label and moved it up, the result would be "More than 20 hours per week" being assigned the code value of "6".

Move Value Label Down

Moves the selected Value label down in the list. The Code value associated with the selected Value label does not move with the value label because code values have to be in numeric order. When you move the Value label down, it will be assigned the Code value of the nest Value label as it moves. For example, if the value label of "Less than 1 hour per week" was originally assigned the code value of "1", and you selected this code value/value label and moved it down, the result would be "Less than 1 hour per week" being assigned the code value of "2".

Copy List to Clipboard

Makes a copy of the Code values and Value labels list on the Windows Clipboard. This can be useful if you have more than one variable with the same code values and value labels. You can enter the code values and value labels for one variable and then copy them to another variable.

Paste List from Clipboard

Allows you to paste a list of Code values and Value labels from the Windows Clipboard. The list can be comma, tab or space delimited but must include both Code values and Value labels. This can be useful if you have a code specification list that can be copied and pasted into this dialog.

Remove Selected Item

Deletes the selected Code value/Value label from the list of Code values for the selected Variable.

Remove All Items

Deletes all Code value/Value labels from the list of Code values for the selected Variable.

Sort by Value Labels

Sorts the Value labels in alphabetic order. The Code values associated with the Value labels do not get sorted. The code values will always remain in numeric, sequential order. Using the Sort by Value Labels option will result in the reassignment of Code values to Value labels.

Reverse Order

Reverses the order of the Value labels. The Code values associated with the Value labels do not get reversed. The code values will always remain in numeric, sequential order. Using the Reverse Order option will result in the reassignment of Code values to Value labels.

Value labels can be a maximum of 120 characters.

Cancel

Use Cancel to exit the Edit Code Values and Value Labels dialog without applying changes to the selected Variable.
