Split Data into New Variables (Data
grid)
The
Data
tab lets you split variables into one or more new variables:
- Highlight the data values for a given
variable or the entire column for a selected variable.
- Right-click anywhere on the Data
tab.
- Choose Split
Data into New Variables from the right-click context menu.
Specify Split
options:
Delimited
- Choose the Number
of variables to create from the dropdown list.
- Auto
is the WinCross default and will create the number of variables needed
based on the data and the type of delimiter(s) used.
- Choose the Split
at delimiter character from the dropdown list.
- Space
is the WinCross default.
- Custom
allows you to choose a Custom delimiter.
If the custom delimiter in your data is not already specified, enter
the new delimiter in the Custom delimiters
entry box.
Fixed position
- Left click on a column to add a split.
- Right click on a column to
exclude that column.
- Clicking again on the same column
will toggle the split or exclusion off or on.
- As an alternative to left-click
and right-click options, you can use the Split
to the right of columns and Exclude
columns from output entry boxes to specify the fixed
position breaks. These entry boxes are automatically populated when
you use the left-click and right-click method of specifying fixed
position breaks.
- Use Clear
to clear the contents of the Split
to the right of columns and/or Exclude
columns from output entry boxes.
New variable location
- Use
Insert new variable to the right to create the new variables
to the right of the selected variable.
- Use Add
new variables to the end to create the new variables after
the last variable in the data file.
- The new variables are added using
the Variable Name from the
original variable with an _01, _02, _03 added depending on how many
new variables are created (for example, PHONE_01,
PHONE_02, PHONE_03
are added from splitting the variable PHONE
into three new variables).
- The Variable
Label will be the same as the Variable
Name for the new variables.
Note: The last set of
split options specified will remain in memory for the current
WinCross session. |
